Automatic Welding Operator

Primary Function:

Automatic Welding Operator operates automatic GMAW (MIG) equipment. 


Duties & Responsibilities:

Automatic welding operator loads parts with required tooling to positioner for automated welding.  Controls, observes, and monitors welding of automated equipment. Welding operators visually inspects their welds.  Employee will report errors, faults, and failures that cause welding downtime to supervisor for issues to be resolved.  Welding operator will perform routine maintenance to welding equipment and consumables.  Internal training provided for automatic welding equipment use and production process.


Work Activities:

  • Clamp, hold, tack-weld, heat-bend, grind or bolt component parts to obtain required configurations and positions for welding.
  • Detect faulty operation of equipment or defective materials and notify supervisors
  • Operate safety equipment and use safe work habits.
  • Use of torches and/or induction heater for preheating. SAFETY NOTE:  The induction heater uses magnetic energy that cannot be used around those with pace makers.
  • Produces minimal semi-automatic GMAW welding for tacking and hard surfacing weldments prior to automated welding procedure.  
  • Examine work pieces for defects and measure work pieces with straightedges or templates to ensure conformance with specifications.
  • Lay out, position, align, and secure parts and assemblies prior to assembly, using straightedges, combination squares, calipers, and rulers.
  • Analyze engineering drawings, blueprints, specifications, sketches, work orders, and material safety data sheets to plan weld schedule.
  • Mark or tag material with proper job number, piece marks, and other identifying marks as required.
  • Prepare all material surfaces to be welded, ensuring that there is no loose or thick scale, slag, rust, moisture, grease, or other foreign matter.
  • Select and install torches, torch tips, filler rods, and flux, according to welding schedules and WPS.
  • Position and secure work pieces, using hoists, cranes, wire, and banding machines or hand tools.
  • Clean or degrease parts, using wire brushes, portable grinders, or chemical baths.
  • Setup, program and operate automatic welding station for a wide variety of weldments.
  • Enters commands to start robot, observes robotic operation, and monitors screen of machine controller for malfunctions and error messages
  • Changes worn bits or adjusts machine according to error message instructions.
  • Keeps workstation maintained and clean including machine, parts, tools, and fixtures.


Knowledge & Skills:

Job requires the use of the automated GMAW operation, induction heating, semiautomatic GMAW tack welding and hard surfacing, overhead crane, jib crane, hand tools and small power tools.

Basic knowledge of GMAW principles, basic mathematics, and fabrication practices will be utilized. 




Ability to complete projects with little or no supervision

Steel toe boots, safety glasses, and hearing protection are required at all times.

Must comprehend and operate basic computer controls.

Prior robotic GMAW welding experience preferred.

WeldPro software experience is a plus.

Minimum 3 years of welding experience.
